DJI Matrice 4T for Industrial Inspection and Asset Monitoring

Industrial and utility inspection methods vary depending on the asset, the location and the job requirements. Inspecting high-voltage lines, electrical substations, commercial roofing, wind turbines and industrial processing plants often involves difficult terrain, working at height or resolving outages in tight windows.

Traditional methods such as rope access, scaffolding, elevated work platforms and manned helicopters remain important where physical access, line repairs or hands-on testing are required. However, they can also introduce significant planning, safety and logistical considerations.

Enterprise drones provide a practical option for inspection teams. Rather than replacing established maintenance and engineering methods, platforms such as the DJI Matrice 4T support existing workflows by capturing visual and thermal data without requiring personnel to physically access elevated or difficult-to-reach assets. This allows asset managers and field engineers to perform initial assessments, identify areas requiring closer investigation and document conditions before committing personnel to physical access.

Supporting Power Line and Infrastructure Maintenance

Maintaining overhead power lines, transformer banks and distribution networks across New Zealand requires regular monitoring to identify potential issues and plan maintenance.

Deploying the DJI Matrice 4T along line corridors allows field crews to inspect hardware conditions without relying solely on ground-based observations. Operators can assess insulator stacks, cross-arms, conductor hardware and transformer components for visible damage, wear or vegetation encroachment. Capturing clear visual and thermal data before maintenance can help lines teams understand the condition of an asset and plan follow-up work.

Detailed Inspection from a Distance

Capturing visual information from difficult-to-access infrastructure is one of the key advantages of aerial inspection. The DJI Matrice 4T integrates multiple high-resolution cameras designed to support close-range detail capture and broader site evaluations.

Medium Telephoto Camera: Featuring a 48 MP sensor with a 70mm equivalent focal length, the medium telephoto camera is designed for mid-range inspection work. At around 10 metres away, it can assist operators in identifying details such as missing hardware, surface cracks, corrosion and instrument readings.

Telephoto Camera: The 48 MP telephoto camera features a 168mm equivalent focal length to capture detailed imagery from greater standoff distances. DJI states that it can resolve details such as signs from up to 250 metres away, allowing operators to inspect towers, line infrastructure and larger structures without flying as close to the asset.

Identifying Temperature Differences with Thermal Imaging

Thermal imaging can help inspection teams identify temperature variations that may indicate potential issues.

The Matrice 4T features a radiometric thermal sensor with a native 640 × 512 resolution and supports High-Res mode up to 1280 × 1024. This can assist operators in identifying potential temperature differences across energised substation components, solar PV arrays, wind turbine components and building exteriors.

Inspection Beyond Daylight Hours

Substation maintenance, emergency fault response and structural assessments do not always coincide with optimal daylight hours. Environmental factors such as heavy shadows under bridge decks or dark building eaves can also present challenges for optical cameras.

The Matrice 4T includes an IR-Cut Filter and a Near-Infrared (NIR) auxiliary light designed to improve visibility in darker environments. The NIR light can illuminate targets up to 100 metres away, while the Matrice 4 Series' Night Scene Mode uses enhanced low-light imaging and noise reduction to improve visibility during dusk and night operations.

Aerial Monitoring for Site Security

The Matrice 4T can also be deployed for security patrols across large utility compounds, perimeters and critical infrastructure sites. Automated waypoint missions support repeatable perimeter routes, while the visual and thermal payloads provide additional visibility over areas that may be difficult to monitor from ground level.

When a perimeter alert occurs, the drone can provide aerial visibility without requiring security personnel to immediately approach an unknown situation. Live video feeds can help teams assess the situation and coordinate a ground response. Together, the Matrice 4T and DJI FlightHub 2 can support perimeter patrols and alarm-response workflows, giving authorised teams access to live aerial imagery when responding to security events.

Turning Aerial Findings into Action

Collecting aerial imagery is most useful when target locations can be clearly communicated to planning and maintenance crews.

The Matrice 4T includes a built-in Laser Rangefinder with a measurement range of up to 1,800 metres. During flight, operators can use the PinPoint feature to mark an area of interest, obtaining its geographic coordinates and elevation.

Target location data can be shared via a QR code from DJI Pilot 2 or through DJI FlightHub 2. This helps teams pinpoint specific poles, towers or other assets requiring further investigation and plan follow-up physical inspections.
